Train Hard, Recover Well: Body Rolling for Active People

You already know the drill

You know DOMS. You know the morning-after-leg-day walk. You know that feeling of heading back up a fell on legs that haven't quite forgiven you for the last one.

When you train regularly, soreness and stiffness are part of the package. But the way you recover makes a huge difference to how you feel day to day, and to how ready you are to get back out there. That's where body rolling comes in.

Why recovery deserves a spot in your week

Most active people are brilliant at planning their training and much less consistent with their recovery. Yet recovery is when your body adapts, repairs and gets stronger.

If you're stacking runs, lifting several times a week, doing back-to-back classes or spending weekends on the fells, a regular recovery session helps you:

  • Feel looser and more comfortable between sessions

  • Keep stiffness from building up over a heavy week

  • Stay consistent, because you're not skipping days feeling battered

  • Actually switch off, which is easy to forget when you're always on the go

What body rolling does for active bodies

Upstairs at Sōma Sana on Station Street, our two infrared body rollers give you a deep, rhythmic full-body massage that you move with, while an infrared lamp gently warms the skin.

New to the rollers? Start with our guide to body rolling in Cockermouth.

Works the whole body in one go

The shaped wooden rollers work through your feet, calves, thighs, glutes, back and arms, so you get full-body recovery in a single session rather than spending ages on a foam roller.

Eases tight, heavy muscles

The deep kneading action helps ease stiffness and tightness, and clients tell us their legs feel noticeably lighter afterwards, which is exactly what you want before your next run or session.

Supports circulation

The rolling action supports your circulation and lymphatic system, helping your body clear fluid and get on with its natural repair work.

Gentle warmth for stiff muscles

The infrared lamp gently warms the skin, which feels great on stiff muscles and helps you relax into the massage.

Recovery, not another workout

You move with the drum while it does most of the work, and you're supported throughout, so it complements your training rather than adding to your load.

How to fit it into your training

On your rest or recovery days

This is the ideal slot. A Body Roll on a rest day keeps you moving gently while giving your muscles proper attention.

After your hardest sessions

Book in within a day or two of your toughest workouts, long runs or big fell days, when soreness is building or at its peak.

After a race or big event

Marathon, fell race, sportive or a long hike? A session in the days afterwards helps you bounce back sooner.

As a weekly habit

If you train most days, one or two sessions a week makes a brilliant, consistent part of your routine. Busy week? The Express Body Roll fits in when time is tight.

If you have a specific injury rather than general soreness, such as a sudden sharp pain, swelling or a pulled muscle, let us know before you book so we can advise you.

Build your recovery stack

Want to go all in? Pair your Body Roll with our other recovery favourites:

  • Red light therapy: a 10-minute session that's perfect on recovery days

  • PEMF: our high-intensity full body PEMF bed, a favourite with runners, walkers and anyone carrying aches and niggles

Plenty of our regulars book them back to back for a full recovery session.

Choose your session

  • The Body Roll: 45 minutes on the rollers, full-body recovery from feet to shoulders, £35

  • The Express Body Roll: 18 minutes on the rollers, a quick reset for busy training weeks, £25

  • 12 Body Roll sessions: £220, ideal for a weekly recovery habit

Train with a buddy? Duo sessions are £60 for The Body Roll or £40 for The Express Body Roll, so bring your running partner or gym mate.

Ready to recover better?

Whether you're training for your next race, lifting most days or spending every weekend on the fells, come and see how body rolling fits into your recovery. New clients can try two Express Body Roll sessions for just £25, and we'll be with you every step of your first visit.
