Body Rolling in Cockermouth: The Infrared Roller Everyone's Talking About
Feel lighter, look sculpted, switch off
Body rolling has taken over wellness studios from New York to London, and now it's here in Cockermouth. If you've seen the videos and wondered what all the fuss is about, here's everything you need to know.
Upstairs at Sōma Sana on Station Street, we have two infrared body rollers, and they're a brilliant way to support your lymphatic system in Cockermouth. Think of a deep, rhythmic full-body massage that you move with, warmed by infrared light.
The rollers are a drum of smooth, shaped wooden rollers that rotate against your body. As you work through a series of positions, from your feet all the way up to your arms and back, they knead and lift the tissue, helping move fluid towards the body's natural drainage points. Meanwhile an infrared lamp gently warms the skin, making the whole experience feel cosy and relaxing.
Why everyone's booking in
Debloat and feel lighter
Your lymphatic system works hard every day, but long hours at a desk, travel, stress and busy weeks can leave you feeling sluggish and bloated. Body rolling gives it a helping hand, and the feeling clients mention most is how much lighter they feel walking out.
Smoother, firmer-looking skin
The deep kneading action and infrared warmth work together on areas like thighs, hips, bum and tummy. With regular sessions, clients notice skin that looks smoother and feels firmer, including the appearance of cellulite.
Sculpt and tone
Body rolling helps your body shift excess water weight, so many clients notice inch loss from areas like the bum, hips, thighs and waist when they use it alongside their normal routine. It's a brilliant addition to the eating well and moving more you're already doing.
Recovery for busy bodies
Whether you've been up a fell, at the gym or on your feet all day, the rollers ease tight, tired muscles and help you recover. Legs that feel heavy at the end of the day get a real lift too.
An hour that's just for you
The rhythm, the warmth and the deep massage make it seriously relaxing. Clients tell us they sleep better, feel calmer and have more energy afterwards.
Better with a friend
We have two machines side by side, so you can bring a friend, your partner or your mum and roll together. It's the perfect excuse for a catch-up that's good for you.
What happens at your first session
Your first visit is all about getting you comfortable, so you're never left to figure it out.
A quick health check. We'll go through a short questionnaire to make sure the rollers are right for you, and you'll sign a one-off form.
Your induction. One of our team will show you how everything works and talk you through each position.
Follow the screen. The display shows a photo and short video of each position, so you always know what's next. The programme moves you on automatically.
Move with the rollers. You lean into the drum and move in rhythm with it while it works each area. You're supported throughout, so your back is never doing the hard work.
Go solo. Once you're confident, you can book in and roll on your own. We'll check in on your first solo session, then it's all yours.
What to wear: close-fitting gym clothes, such as leggings and a fitted T-shirt. Tie long hair back and leave jewellery at home. Avoid anything with strings, toggles or loose buttons.

Your questions answered
Does it hurt?
It shouldn't. It's firm and deep, and the first session or two can feel intense if you carry a lot of tension, but most people find it really relaxing once they're used to it.
Do I need to be fit?
Not at all. The positions are simple and you're supported throughout, so it suits complete beginners as well as regular gym-goers and walkers. One or two positions can feel a little trickier if you have mobility issues, so just let us know and we'll adapt them for you.
How often should I come?
For changes in shape and skin, two to three sessions a week gives you the best results. If you simply want to feel good, once a week or even once a month makes a lovely part of your wellness routine. You'll still get that lighter, relaxed feeling, even if it won't change your shape on its own.
When will I notice a difference?
Many people feel lighter and less bloated after their very first session. Changes in how skin looks and feels build up over a few weeks of regular rolling.
Is there anyone who shouldn't use it?
Yes. It isn't suitable during pregnancy, or if you have heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, varicose veins, a recent operation or a history of cancer in the last five years. There's a weight limit of 120 kg. We'll go through everything with you before your first session.
Can I come during my period?
If you usually get discomfort, we'd suggest skipping the first few days of your period, as the massage may not feel as enjoyable.
